Sansui
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Omori-kita, Ota Ward, Oshokujidokoro Sansui opens at 6:00 a.m., serving crisp salt-grilled mackerel, stir-fried yakiniku set meals, and an array of fresh fish dishes in an unpretentious neighborhood diner setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Opening its doors at 6:00 a.m. amid rising steam and the aroma of grilled fish, Oshokujidokoro Sansui (御食事処 山水) is an unpretentious neighborhood diner that welcomes guests for hearty breakfasts, lunches, and evening drinks. True to the shokujidokoro banner out front, solo diners frequently drop by for set meals, giving the interior a familiar, lively atmosphere.
A satisfying highlight on the lunch and set-meal menu is the yakiniku teishoku, featuring pork belly stir-fried with onions and green bell peppers in a savory-sweet sauce. Cooked swiftly over high heat in a wok so the glaze clings evenly, the dish pairs effortlessly with generous helpings of freshly steamed rice. Seafood lovers also gravitate toward the saba shioyaki set meal, where the mackerel's skin is grilled crisp while the tender, oily flesh is served alongside grated daikon radish.
Beyond standard teishoku trays, the kitchen's broad selection of seasonal seafood, ranging from fresh sashimi to grilled cuts, forms a central appeal of the shop. Diners can sip draft beer or sake alongside textured aji no namerou (finely chopped horse mackerel) and tuna sashimi, or build a meal around centerpiece grilled fish like silver cod Saikyo-yaki or rich salmon harasu. During morning service, a ham-and-egg set meal—ideal for spooning over rice—can be complemented by adding a standalone grilled fish dish.
Service runs in two split shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with regular closures on Mondays. Because the establishment operates strictly on a cash-only basis, come prepared with bills or coins before sitting down for a relaxed everyday meal or drink.
